The Messy In The Middle series is aimed at children 9+.
The series is fictional but inspired by the young people we work with as coaches. The books provides the reader with a large number of strategies we use in our one-on-one coaching sessions with young clients. By writing ‘Girls Are Lame – Boys Are Gross’, we hope to reach and inspire even more amazing young people… and their parents!
Thor is furious at Freya. She just called him a minion and pulled his hair. He wishes he didn’t have to live with that insufferable girl. But he does, because Freya is his twin sister! Despite his anger with her he also misses how they used to have fun together before she lost her humor and turned into a pre-teen with mood swings. All Freya cares about now is Luke, the seventh grader whom she has a major crush on, and Charlotte her best friend, who is as complicated as she is. Girls are lame! Can it really be that the only thing they have in common right now is their favorite teacher, who tells amazing stories of the ancient Viking gods?
“Girls are Lame and Boys are Gross, but this book is AMAZING! I loved, loved, LOVED this book!
Not only did it teach me a little about Norse mythology, but it also made me laugh, it made me cry, it made me stop and think … and I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it.
The characters are incredibly well-written – with their personalities, characteristics and quirks having been so realistically described, much of the story took me back to my own pre-teen years, when I was experiencing the same trials and tribulations as Freya and Thor as they each deal with their own childhood angst.
Without giving away too much of the plot, all I will say is that every child, whatever their age – and many adults too – will relate to the issues encountered by the characters in this book. Suffice to say that not only is this a captivating story that totally tugged at my heartstrings in places, but it reinforces some extremely valuable life lessons too.
In short, this is a wonderful book – if you’re a child… read it, and then get your friends to read it – if you’re a parent, read it and then get your kids to read it. And then, as I did, read it again, and enjoy it even more the second time around 🙂
I don’t know if the second book in the series will continue on from where this one left off, but I hope so – it would be great to know what happens next.
Entertaining and thought-provoking, this is a terrific book and one which I highly recommend.” -SherriB
